During the official visit of the President of Costa Rica to Singapore from 1 to 4 December 2008, Costa Rica and Singapore decided to launch free trade negotiations.

On 29 January 2010, after four rounds of negotiations, Costa Rica and Singapore concluded free trade negotiations.  Singapore and Costa Rica signed the Singapore-Costa Rica Free Trade Agreement (SCRFTA) on 06 April 2010.
